What a great find and at my favourite bookstore in the whole world, Booka.
'Road to Valour', by Aili and Andres McConnon portrays a side to Gino Bartali's life that was until recently known by only a handful of people. During WW2 he worked with the resistance in Italy, primarily cycling thousands of miles with forged paperwork hidden within his bicycle frame. He never told anyone, including his wife, until it was uncovered by historians towards the end of his life. Even then he was reluctant to discuss his heroic work.
He also has the longest gap between TDF wins, 10 years. We can only dream what could have happened if his career had not been interrupted by the war, but surely what he did is worth much much more.
