On Wednesday I had my faith in mankind and the retail world renewed. I took our daily child carrying beater to Rapid Transit Cycles expecting to leave it for a full tune up/service and a fair bit of parts and labor. Jeff the mechanic I met, heaved her up onto a stand and started jiggling, yanking, twisting, tapping, spinning and squeezing, all the while narrating the results to me.
The upshot of which is the statement that it is in pretty good shape (surprisingly), it does not require a service and only needs a new cassette and chain!!! So about half the cost I was expecting. I am not accusing others in a similar position to having ripped me off in the past - but hey it happens. Jeff thanks for the honesty and taking time to chat even though you were desperate to leave.
The whole time this was sitting behind me and I could not help but imagine a 7 year old Molly stoking when in two years time we embark on an epic family bike tour.
